Chapter 12: Tears of Lys

Tears of Lys, said to be invented by the alchemists of Lys, have a taste as clear and sweet as water, and when dissolved in wine, cannot be smelled or tasted.

It can disrupt the stomach and intestines, causing death within a day or two, but appearing like a normal intestinal illness.

Some people therefore regard it as poison.

But it just stays there quietly, allowing people to manipulate it.

Is it its fault?

Petyr came and took it away, handing it to a lovelorn woman.

Tears of Lys have now become a seemingly ordinary pot of red wine, quietly waiting in the Hand's study.

It was already late at night, and Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, was still staring intently at the book under the candlelight.

《A Genealogical and Historical Account of the Great Houses of Westeros (Including Many Descriptions of Lords, Ladies, and Their Children)》, written by Maester Malleon centuries ago, is trivial and complicated, seemingly without any practical value.

But the Hand had found the most crucial evidence in it.

The evidence was very important.

In the legendary tales of the Age of Heroes, Lannister family's ancestor, "Cunning" Lann, stole sunlight from the sun and dyed his hair golden.

The Lannister family's golden hair, inherited for thousands of years, is therefore well-known, and no one suspects why the three princes and princesses all do not have black hair. Robert Baratheon is no exception.

But this book clearly records the union between the stag and the lion.

The most recent was more than ninety years ago, the lioness's stillborn baby boy had black hair, and thirty years before that, the doe bore four children for the lion, all of whom had black hair.

He kept tracing back through the yellowed pages, golden always yields to charcoal black.

"The seed is strong."

Jon was in turmoil, finally having undeniable evidence, but how to end this?

He couldn't help but notice that Cersei had left King's Landing with her three children during the day, and the Kingslayer had also left. Was it a coincidence?

In this situation, can it be resolved peacefully?

Jon knew the answer.

"The seed is strong," he murmured.

He knew Robert's temper best. Once he rashly learned the truth, the fate of the Seven Kingdoms would irretrievably fall into the abyss.

His wife, Lysa, came over, "Jon, go to bed early."

Catching a glimpse of his wife's evasive and fragile eyes, the Hand was as amiable as ever, "I still have things to do, don't wait for me. Is Robin asleep?"

In any case, he had to wait until Lysa and Robin returned to the Eyrie before making plans.

With more than seventy years of life experience, Jon would no longer act impulsively. Only by arranging family matters properly could he fully deal with the crisis of the Seven Kingdoms.

As long as Robin returns to the Vale, the vassals of the Eyrie will protect him. My little Robin will become the proud and glorious new King of the Eyrie, inheriting the glory of the Arryn family.

As high as honor.

If I could see this scene with my own eyes, I would have no regrets even in death.

"The Mother blesses, little Robin sleeps well, without fussing or making noise." Lysa took the initiative to refill her husband's wine glass, "It's cold at night, it's good to drink some wine to warm up before continuing to work."

The Hand smiled with satisfaction.

He didn't ask much of his young wife, as long as she had maternal love for Robin. Now it seems that the marriage between the two is also developing in a good direction.

His wife went to rest, leaving Jon with a silent and dim space again.

His thoughts couldn't help but turn back to the troubling matter.

"The seed is strong."

Jon raised his glass and took a big gulp.

… …

The next morning.

After going to the toilet several times, the Hand collapsed on the bed and could no longer get up.

The severe pain in his abdomen wantonly destroyed his thinking and reason, with no signs of relief or improvement.

Lysa Tully and her child Robert Arryn (nicknamed Robin) were not in the room.

There was no way, according to Lady Lysa, little Robin was not in good health to begin with, and if Jon's illness was contagious or stimulated little Robin's spirit, it would be terrible.

The servants kept wiping the Hand's body and stretching his muscles and bones, trying to make the Hand as comfortable as possible.

"Maester, what do you see? I originally thought that Lord Jon had eaten too much ice and caught a cold in his stomach, but now the condition is getting more and more serious…"

Archmaester Colmon, the Arryn's maester, asked worriedly.

Pycelle shook his head and sighed, "Alas, child, you are too young and do not know how fragile the elderly are. Even a small ailment can take the lives of people our age."

Maester Colmon did not give up, "Perhaps we can give Lord Jon some more purgatives and pepper water, we can't just do nothing, right?"

Pycelle patted him on the shoulder.

"Good child, you are very smart and capable, but let me tell you a little more of the old man's experience."

"For weak patients, you must not use drugs casually, otherwise you will only harm them."

Pycelle stroked his long white beard with emotion.

"Sometimes, doing nothing is much better than acting blindly."

Colmon still couldn't figure it out, "But…"

Pycelle waved his hand to stop him, "Child, Maester Colmon, you are too nervous, go down, let me handle things here."

The Archmaester sent away the young Maester Colmon, then sat quietly by the Hand's bedside.

The servants waited for the Archmaester's instructions, but Pycelle only let them continue.

The room became busy again, but no one knew what the use of this was, perhaps it was just to make themselves look less useless.

Archmaester Pycelle sat motionless as if he were asleep.

He had served four kings.

Robert Baratheon, the last king of the previous dynasty, "Mad King" Aerys Targaryen, Aerys's father Jaehaerys II, and Jaehaerys's father 'Egg the Unlikely' Aegon V.

But he felt that the most kingly and truly deserving to rule the country among the Seven Kingdoms was Lord Tywin Lannister, who had never worn a crown.

Pycelle understood that he was too concerned about the Lannister family.

But what is the reason for an old man in his eighties to live? The fear of death and worldly desires cannot be ruled out, of course.

But the most important reason is probably to want to change and leave something behind.

The king of the Seven Kingdoms should be good at and happy to govern the country, should not indulge himself or others, and should not be as cruel as the Mad King, preferably like Duke Tywin.

The unconscious Hand made a vague sound.

Pycelle leaned closer to listen, it seemed that he was calling "Robert", not knowing whether he was calling the King or the frail little Robin (Robert).

The atmosphere in the Red Keep has been very strange these days.

Pycelle knew that the Queen wanted the Hand to die!

Although she never said it, Pycelle understood the meaning in her eyes.

Now, would it be a good opportunity?

Is Hand Jon sick, or some rare poison?

Pycelle was not too sure, he just chose to wait and see, time would tell everything.

Hopefully everything goes well.
