Exploiting Hollywood 1980
Chapter 280: Days of Studying with Coppola
Turn back the clock to several months ago. In order to learn how to train actors’ acting skills, Ronald became Coppola’s special assistant. The performance in “Fast and Furious” was not realistic enough, so he took the initiative to come to Coppola’s “The Untamed” crew to learn from him.
He and Diane Lane, who was chosen to play the heroine Cherry, and her father Bert happened to meet at the airport. They all flew from all over to the small town of Tulsa, Oklahoma, to shoot “The Untamed”.
This is the hometown of the original author SE Hinton. She studied in high school here. She wrote “The Untamed” at the age of fifteen. After a year of revision, it was published at the age of sixteen and became a bestseller.
“Tulsa Grand Hotel.”
Ronald saw the sign and knew that it was the hotel booked by the crew. He went to check in with several actors in the same car.
“See you later, Ronald.” Bert said goodbye to Ronald and went to find a room in another hotel first.
Bert was worried about his daughter this time, so he came to Tulsa to accompany his daughter to shoot. However, he was not an official member of the crew and had to find a hotel to stay in.
Hinton helped to find the hotel where the crew stayed. In fact, there was no need to find one, as there was only one large hotel near the filming location that could accommodate all the crew members.
There was a large fountain at the entrance of the hotel, and a cheap replica of an ancient Greek sculpture stood there in the middle. The water in the pool was relatively clean, in sharp contrast to the dust on the sculpture. Perhaps it was temporarily changed to welcome the great director Coppola.
The main building of the hotel is a five-story building. Some technical personnel in the early stage have already checked in with various equipment, props, costumes, etc. The actors and creative staff who came today arrived at about the same time and were noisily checking in at the front desk.
A group of young actors who played the two major teenage gangs in the movie were waiting to get their room keys. The first assistant director began to call people with the room allocation list.
Tom Cruise, 104; Patrick Swayze, 105; Emilio Estevez 110;
Matt Dillon 202;
Diane Lane 305; Michelle Meylink 306;
Lef Garrett 503; Darren Dalton 504;
"Everyone has half an hour to rest, and then go to Room 101 to collect today's pocket money."
Ronald himself also lived on the first floor, in a room at the corner. He opened the door, put down his package, and rested for a while.
I don't know if this room arrangement was decided by Coppola, it's very interesting.
The actors who played the rich dude gang all lived in suites on the fourth and fifth floors. The actors who played the poor greasy head gang all lived in the low-end rooms on the first floor. Several teenage actresses, including Diane Lane, lived on the middle floor.
They were all young teenage actors. In the movie, they played two opposing gangs, and Diane played Cherry, who caused the war between the two gangs, and lived on the third floor in the middle.
"Ronald, come and help me." The first assistant director saw Ronald ready to go out, and immediately pulled him in to work.
"This is the script, help me bind it with a metal ring."
Ronald went forward to help bind it, checked the page numbers of the copied script, added a plastic cover, then punched holes with a puncher, threaded them with iron rings, and stacked them on the table in his room.
"Why are the scripts there different?" Ronald finished his own pile of scripts and started to help other assistants with their scripts.
This pile of scripts has different binding materials. After punching, they don't use cheap iron rings, but copper rings, and add cowhide covers. There are also gold-plated movie names and everyone's names on it. It feels good to hold it in your hand, just like an old-fashioned hardcover book.
"This is for the actors of the Gongzi Gang."
"Even the scripts are treated differently?" Ronald was a little surprised. Director Coppola even considered such details? "Why is that?"
"You still have a lot to learn, Ronald. Come here now." Francis Coppola came in to check the situation and saw Ronald there, so he called him to his room.
"Ronald, you know the budget for this movie is very high. We have to save some money from Warner. I can only give you 10% of the advance salary now."
"No problem, I told my agent that even if I pay, I will come to the crew to learn from you. If there is anything, please let me know." Ronald was a little tight on money when he heard that he didn't care.
Coppola's Zoetrope Company had some financial problems. But Ronald came to learn how to guide actors' acting skills, which were all minor problems.
"I don't want you to come here to work, but I need your advice, Ronald." Coppola was not very satisfied with his initiative to help with chores. Coppola had as many assistants as he wanted.
"When George was in my crew, he gave me suggestions every day, saying this was wrong, that was wrong. If you can give me a useful suggestion every day like him, I will be satisfied."
When George Lucas was Coppola's younger brother, did he give Coppola so many suggestions every day? Ronald overheard some gossip.
"Well, I may not have as many suggestions as Mr. Lucas, but one a day is not a big problem."
"Good boy. Now go and help the camera crew prepare for tomorrow's rehearsal." Coppola patted Ronald on the shoulder.
It turns out that he still has to be a handyman, but he is a handyman who can give suggestions.
Ronald went to find the room of the photography team. When he passed the door, he saw a large group of actors gathered at the door of the first assistant director's room on the first floor to collect the pocket money for the day.
Huh? Ronald, who was watching the excitement at the door, found different treatments again.
The actors of the Gongzi Gang are all teenage idols. They are accompanied by managers and have more pocket money. The actors of the Oilhead Gang have no managers to accompany them, and they only have two dollars of pocket money every day, which is only enough to buy some snacks in this remote and backward town.
Ronald stroked his beard. Coppola is really interesting.
On the first day of reporting, he started to train the actors? Giving different treatments to actors who play different roles, is this to let them experience the life of the characters?
"Ronald? Nice to meet you." The director of photography pulled Ronald over. "We're going to start rehearsals tomorrow. Francis asked us to record everything. The camera crew hasn't arrived yet. If there's a need for multi-camera shooting, you can help with a video recorder."
"No problem." Ronald tried the Sony BetaCa video recorder in the room. He was already familiar with this type of video recorder during the audition. Having spent a lot of time in the crew, it was no big deal for him to work part-time as a photographer using a video recorder.
Ronald left the room and planned to go for a walk in town. He happened to see Tom Cruise and a handsome guy going out together. Ronald recognized him as Rob Lowe, who played the second brother of the protagonist "Ma Zai" and "Soda Pop".
"Hi, Tom, Rob." Ronald happened to be going out with them.
"Where are you going? Ronald, we'll go with you."
"I haven't been to Tulsa either, but I know the original author, Ms. Hinton, who is a local. Have you seen her? You can ask her."
The group found the author Hinton, who was also staying at the hotel. The fat Hinton warmly hugged several actors and Ronald.
"Do you want to go to town? There are movie theaters and restaurants. By the way, that movie theater is the one where the gangsters came out of the movie at the beginning. It has not changed for decades."
Ronald took the lead and fell down. It seems that this town has no entertainment facilities.
"Hey, greasy guys. Do you want to have dinner with us?" Leif Garrett, the youth star who played Bob in the Gongzi Gang who was stabbed to death in the end, laughed at the actors here, "But your pocket money is not enough, hahaha."
"Oh, Shxt." Tom Cruise looked at the two dollars in his hand and put the money in his pocket angrily.
Rob Lowe also rolled his eyes, "How can I survive these two months."
"It's okay, I have money." Ronald took out a few twenty-dollar bills from his pocket
Thanks to his agent Niceta's reminder, Ronald brought a lot of cash to the backward town of Tulsa. There is no entertainment here, and there is no place to spend money. There is a small shop in the hotel where you can buy some snacks and cola, and there are not many things for sale in the town's department store.
But now you have money and you can have delicious food.
"I don't want to eat with those young masters, so I'll buy some cola and snacks here." Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe walked into the hotel's small shop, picked some cakes, cola and snacks, counted the money, and threw the other snacks back.
"It doesn't matter, come to Hinton's mother, I have delicious food here." Seeing all this, the fat author Hinton hurriedly and enthusiastically greeted Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe to come in and eat the delicious food she prepared.
"This trick works well?" Ronald couldn't help but admire it in his heart.
Just put the two groups of actors in hotel rooms of different grades, use different bindings of scripts, and give them pocket money according to grades, and they will automatically see themselves as different types.
There is no cost to do this, but the effect is surprisingly good. The two groups of teenage actors have already started to hostile each other on the first day.
"Ronald, you come too."
Ronald also walked into Hinton's room. She secretly took out a large bag of snacks and opened it for several actors to choose.
"Oh, you have this here." Tom and Rob were very happy, "Thank you, Hinton's mother."
"Don't worry, if you have any questions, come to Hinton's mother."
Ronald was amused. Hinton liked these actors to perform her works very much. She also listed as the screenwriter of the crew and would guest-star as a nurse. In fact, she came to pamper these beautiful little actors.
There is a positive treatment of different treatments, and Hinton is allowed to give them some convenience. The crew is all teenage actors. It is estimated that the two gangs will soon be formed among the actors.
The old house of the hotel is made of wood, and the carpet in the corridor upstairs is very worn out, and the sound insulation effect is very poor when stepped on.
Ronald, who was sleeping in his room until midnight, was awakened by the sound of "dong dong dong".
He picked up the watch beside the bed and saw that it was only two o'clock in the morning. Ronald couldn't sleep because of the noise, so he got up to see what was going on.
A thin figure, wearing a vest and jeans, walked in the corridor with his arms folded.
"Who is it?" Ronald shouted.
"It's me, Ralph. Ralph Mazzio."
It turned out to be Ralph Mazzio, who played the protagonist's henchman's friend. Although he is 20 years old this year and is considered older among many young actors, he still looks young and looks younger than Tom Cruise and others.
"Why don't you sleep and walk here?" Ronald asked curiously as he saw him walking around.
"I don't have a room."
