Seven Cryptical Books of Hsan

"I have often heard that it is not people who are constantly seeking knowledge, but knowledge that is constantly seeking people. But I know that is wrong. Knowledge is not seeking people, but chasing people. Its pursuit is cruel and heartless, like hawks and hounds chasing rabbits." [I have often heard that it is not people who are constantly seeking knowledge, but knowledge that is constantly pursuing people. But I know that is wrong. Knowledge is not pursuing people, but chasing people. Its pursuit is cruel and heartless, like hawks and hounds chasing rabbits.]

-Hsan, 2nd century AD

The author of this book is the ancient Chinese philosopher Hsan the Greater. [Translator's note: Hsan is Wade-Giles' romanization] This book was written around the 2nd century AD and is said to have been originally called "Seven Cryptical Books of the Earth", but the original text has long been lost and only this faithful and detailed Chinese copy is known. The oldest version consists of seven volumes, each volume is equivalent to a chapter, and its content is different and has different themes; each volume contains one or more spells.

Volume 1: About the achievements of the Yellow Emperor, his amazing inventions and medical skills

Spell: Xiansha Huanhun Lu (i.e. "Resurrection of the Dead")

Volume 2: Ritualistic corpse-eating and ghoul beliefs

Spell: Contact ghouls

"These creatures cannot be called complete humans, but they are similar to humans in many ways. They stand upright on two feet and lean forward, looking like a group of dogs; their rubber-like skin makes people feel disgusted."

-H.P. Lovecraft, "Pickman's Model"

Ghouls are humanoid monsters with elastic skin like rubber. They have hoof-like feet, dog-like faces, and sharp claws. They speak in a rapid, crying voice. Because they often forage in graves, most of their bodies are covered with fungi that grow in graves. Lovecraft's ghouls are terrifying creatures that live in underground tunnel networks in cities; they make pacts with witches and sometimes attack humans. After a long time, humans may become ghouls.

Volume 3: Heavenly Ghosts

Spell: 瓓瓓 (i.e. "Summon/Control the Byagers")

"There, rhythmically flapping, are a group of tamed and trained, hybrid-like winged creatures... Even compared to crows, moles, vultures, ants, or rotting human corpses, they are completely different things - I can't remember, and I must never remember."

-H.P. Lovecraft, "The Sabbat"

This interstellar race usually serves "Hasta the Nameless". Their bodies are made of ordinary matter, and ordinary weapons such as pistols can cause normal damage. The Byagers can fly in space, and each can carry one person; in order to resist the vacuum and cold of the universe, the rider must use appropriate spells or **. The Byager has no base on Earth. They usually only appear when they are summoned to perform tasks or used as mounts. [1]

When in combat, the Byager will use both claws to attack (twice per round) or bite the enemy. After the "bite" hits, it will begin to suck blood from the victim. From the beginning of the bite (including the round just bitten), the Byager will drain 1d6 points of strength from the victim every round until the victim dies. Given the character of the Byager, it will never let go until the victim dies or the blood is drained dry.

The victim who is lucky enough to survive can recover strength at a rate of 1d3 points per day through careful nursing and blood transfusion.

Volume 4: Earth Ghosts and Their Relationship with Earthquakes

Spell: Di Gang Kao Zhao Lu (i.e. "Contact the Earth Drilling Demon")

"A bunch of surging tentacles grow on that soft gray-black bag-like body... Apart from the tentacles that stretch out and grope around, it has no obvious features for identification. No, there is - yes, there is a lump at the front of this thing... It is a container for its brain, or nerve center, or any other morbid organ that controls this terrifying and disgusting creature."

-Brian Lumley, "Earth Drilling Demon"

Introduction

This creature is like a giant squid living in the mud.

Their worm-like slender bodies are always wrapped in mucus, and some kind of chanting sound always accompanies these creatures.

These strong and powerful excavators can live for a thousand years and will carefully protect their offspring; Earth Drilling Demons have many unusual abilities that are not similar to any creatures on this planet. The most important individual among them is the huge Shude Meier (one of the Old Ones).

Any burrowing worm in its adult stage can communicate telepathically, so it can contact any individual of its own species, no matter where they are, and sense their thoughts. But only adult burrowing worms can control creatures of other species telepathically.

Volume 5: The Deep Ones and Their Human Followers on the Coast of the South China Sea; Time and Space; Hounds of Tindalos and Liaodan

Spell: Contact Hounds of Tindalos

"'They are thin and hungry!' he screamed. ... 'All the evil in the universe is concentrated in their thin and hungry bodies. Anyway, do they have bodies? I only saw them for a moment; I can't be sure.'"

——F. Belknap Long, The Hounds of Tindalos

The Hounds of Tindalos live on Earth in the ancient times, when life on Earth had not yet evolved and even single-celled organisms did not exist. They live in the "angle" of time, unlike other creatures (that is, ordinary creatures including humans) whose ancestors are "curves" (please understand the words "angles" and "curves" in a literal sense. The time and space in which humans live is "curved", and the time and space in which they live is "angled". In simple terms, the dimensions in which the two live are different). This concept is difficult to understand, and it is a concept that only applies to the Hounds of Tindalos. They will look for prey among ordinary creatures such as humans, and cross time and space to chase sacrifices. They are immortal

We do not know the appearance of this creature, and no one who has come into contact with it has survived. The Hounds of Tindalos are actually far from the appearance of "hounds", but they are always called "hounds" in the story. Because of the relationship between their time and space and "angle", they can only materialize in places with "angles" (less than 120 degrees) such as the corners of a room. Taking a normal house as an example, the angle of the wall is basically 90 degrees. When the Hound of Tindalos appears, smoke will first appear in the corner of the room, and then the head of the hound will appear from the smoke, and then the whole body will appear.

Volume 6: The Cold Plain in Central Asia and the unknown Kadath

Spell: The Ascension of the Fantasy World (i.e. "The Gate of Kadath")

"Hey! A-Shatanag! Let's go! Send the gods of the mortal world back to the secret Kadath they often visit, and pray to everything not to meet my other thousand forms. Farewell, Randolph Carter, you have to be careful; because I am Nyarlathotep, I am the crawling chaos."

Volume 7: Nyarlathotep and his countless forms; the rise of R'lyeh and the return of Cthulhu; Azathoth as the beginning and the end; the ideal form of gods and creatures - the official rank sequence that arranges various divine beings and creatures according to the bureaucratic system

Spell: Contact Nyarlathotep
