Dragon's Origin

#423 - Hou Mansion (Part 2)

Uncle Liu and the others laughed and agreed, and the whole journey was filled with laughter.

In fact, everyone was extremely curious, but no one asked Wang Sheng what kind of deal he had made with the royal family. Unless Wang Sheng himself was willing to reveal it, or the royal family took the initiative to disclose it, actively inquiring about royal secrets in their current awkward position would be tantamount to courting death.

They traveled on the official road, and most of them had changed their appearance, so not many people paid attention to them along the way. In just a few days, they arrived in the capital.

Once in the capital, Wang Sheng didn't take everyone straight to the Marquis's mansion. Instead, he found an inn and settled everyone down.

In the capital, besides the few masters he was familiar with at the Exquisite Pavilion, only the Old Lord Temple in the suburbs could be considered to have a few acquaintances. All in all, Wang Sheng was a stranger to the capital. Wang Sheng didn't know if the golden token the old eunuch Shadow had given him would be useful, so to be cautious, he decided not to bring everyone there directly.

It wasn't that Wang Sheng was being overly cautious, but that dealing with the royal family was not like trusting the promises of ordinary commercial institutions. He wouldn't dare say anything else, but the thousands of years of feudal history on Earth had given Wang Sheng many solid lessons.

The old eunuch Shadow had given Wang Sheng the address of the Marquis's mansion. For his first visit, Wang Sheng only brought the female owner. They looked at the scenery while searching for the place, and after wandering around for a morning, they finally found the location.

It had to be said that the royal family's style was indeed grand. In the capital, where every inch of land was precious, they had forcefully carved out a Marquis's mansion. With a hundred acres of land, it was one of the largest residences besides the imperial city.

The environment was very quiet, surrounded by ancient trees with dappled shadows. There were no hawkers shouting and no endless stream of carriages, making it an excellent place of tranquility amidst the bustle.

He didn't know what it was like inside, but Wang Sheng was very satisfied with the outside. He slowly walked around the high wall full of historical traces to the main entrance, and from a distance, he saw four guards standing at the door like javelins. On the whole street, there was only one other residence of almost the same size opposite, and no other houses. No wonder no one passed by; this was not a place ordinary people could come to.

"Stop!" Just ten zhang away from the entrance of the Marquis's mansion, before Wang Sheng and the female owner could reach the door, someone shouted, "No loitering. Keep away."

This close was enough for them to see many things clearly. It was said to be a Marquis's mansion, but there was no plaque hanging on it, no sign. It was probably waiting for Wang Sheng's decision. If Wang Sheng was willing to make it public, they would publicly acknowledge it as the Marquis's mansion. Otherwise, it would just be a noble residence without a name.

Wang Sheng ignored the shouting and walked straight forward. Seeing that Wang Sheng didn't listen, two of the four gatekeepers came up, holding the hilts of their swords, ready to attack if Wang Sheng went any further.

"Someone told me that as long as I have this, I can take over this mansion." Wang Sheng didn't waste any words. With a flick of his hand, the golden token given by the old eunuch Shadow appeared, and he showed it to the two gatekeepers.

The two gatekeepers stopped. They looked at the golden token, then at each other, and turned to ask the other two gatekeepers for their opinion.

One of them, who seemed to be the leader, hurried forward and carefully examined Wang Sheng's golden token. Then, he bowed to Wang Sheng and said, "Esteemed guest, please wait a moment while I report this."

After speaking, he hurried back into the mansion. Before long, an old man who looked like an internal affairs steward, holding a horsetail whisk, hurried out. He looked around at the entrance and saw Wang Sheng and the female owner.

"Esteemed guest, please forgive my impoliteness, but please allow me to verify the golden token!" Facing Wang Sheng, the old steward, who was obviously an eunuch, bowed and requested in his unique, high-pitched voice.

Wang Sheng didn't think there was anything wrong with it. If someone came with a token, he would always want to take a look and verify it. Without worrying about anything else, he handed the golden token to the old steward who had already stretched out his hands to receive it.

"Esteemed guest, please wait!" The old steward held the golden token with both hands and trotted to the entrance. Then, he handed the golden token to a young eunuch inside the gate, while he stood at the entrance, waiting with his eyes lowered.

Not only Wang Sheng, but even the female owner didn't feel anything was wrong. But when they had been standing there for twenty minutes without any movement, they realized that something was probably wrong.

A sniper never lacked patience. Wang Sheng watched the old steward still standing at the door and didn't think the worst. He just comforted the female owner and continued to wait.

After another twenty minutes, there was still no movement. The old steward didn't speak or move, just standing there. The four gatekeepers had returned to their original positions, standing like four javelins, not even glancing at Wang Sheng and the female owner.

An hour later, Wang Sheng seemed to have figured something out. He sighed and walked forward. This time, the gatekeepers didn't stop him, allowing Wang Sheng to walk directly to the old eunuch steward.

"If there's any inconvenience, just return the golden token to me, and I'll leave first," Wang Sheng said to the old steward very politely.

"Golden token?" The old eunuch, who had been slightly lowering his head and staring at the spot in front of his toes, didn't raise his head when he heard Wang Sheng's words. He just raised his eyelids slightly and asked with a puzzled expression, "What golden token?"

Now, even a fool like Wang Sheng knew that he had been tricked. There was really nothing good about cooperating with these royal guys. Even the promised rewards could be denied. They really wanted it.

"Understood!" Wang Sheng smiled at him and didn't say much. "Then please return the item to its rightful owner." After speaking, he turned and left.

The female owner had also heard their words. Watching this scene unfold before her eyes, she, a businesswoman who valued integrity more than anything, couldn't help but be stunned and amazed. So some things could be done like this? She was indeed still too naive!

Wang Sheng signaled to the female owner, and they didn't say anything else, walking straight back the way they had come.

"Someone asked me to give you a message." After they had walked a few steps, the old steward's sinister voice suddenly came from behind, "Some things are not something you are qualified to touch. Since you are so understanding, then we will spare your life. Leave the capital as soon as possible! Otherwise, no one can guarantee your safety."
