Dominate South Asia

Chapter 307 Gorbachev

The Indians' actions were very secretive. When these fighters arrived, they were deployed on the eastern front for flight training. Pakistan's intelligence agencies did not find out.

And this time, the French revealed it when Saudi Arabia and the French ordered fighters.

Fortunately, there were only eight, and this number did not play a big role at all. Muhammad was relieved. After the arrival of Saudi Arabia's Mirage 4000, he thoroughly studied the performance of this fighter with Saudi Arabia!

There are still a few months left for Pakistan, because Muhammad clearly remembers that the second climax of the Afghan war was after Gorbachev came to power!

Time, like running water, is flowing slowly. Although Muhammad's arrival has brought about earth-shaking changes in the situation in South Asia, history is still developing along its original trajectory in places where Muhammad has not touched.

For example, the Soviet Union.

The Soviet Union, the full name of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, was formed on January 1, 1922 by the merger of the Russian Federation, Belarus, Ukraine and the Transcaucasian Federation. It is the largest country in the world, spanning most of Eastern Europe and almost all of Central Asia and North Asia. Although it is composed of equal-rights Soviet Socialist Republics on the principle of voluntary union, its power is highly concentrated. The Communist Party of the Soviet Union has absolute power and implements a complete socialist system and planned economic policies throughout the country.

In the early days of the founding of the country, the planned economy played a huge role, allowing this backward agricultural country to quickly become an industrial country and win the Second World War. However, as time passed. This planned economy has increasingly revealed its drawbacks.

When the younger generation began to gradually have their own ideas, what kind of country did they see? Missiles, aircraft carriers, and fighter jets can be produced, but even bread has to be lined up in the mall. They work all day, but still cannot get enough wealth. At the same time, the privileged class is corrupt and decadent.

These people did not experience World War II, and they have no special feelings for their country. They only know that their country should have democracy and freedom like the West!

More importantly, there is the change of regime in the Soviet Union.

When Brezhnev gained the upper hand in the Cold War with the United States, he also made a decision on the lifelong system of cadres, without retirement time. They can continue to serve as officials, even until death.

The elderly Brezhnev almost lost the ability to walk in the later period of his rule, but he still notified this huge empire, and even three days before his death, he was still trembling in the Red Square parade.

His successor, Andropov, was 68 years old when he took office. He was not old enough. He could still preside over the overall situation of the country and carry out reforms. Unfortunately, he began to fall ill after half a year in power, and then he finally died of illness.

His successor, Chernenko, was an old man in his seventies. This grandfather had just decided to be a temporary substitute when he took office. After taking office, he almost never worked normally.

The Soviet Union has become a country ruled by the elderly. And the whole country seems to be trembling. He was terminally ill, and as old as his ruling staff.

The Soviet Union must reform! If it does not reform, the Soviet Union will only become more corrupt and degenerate!

The Soviet Union still looks strong on the outside, but only its top leaders know how serious the situation is.

The time has entered March of 1985.

Moscow is still cold, and the roads outside are full of snow. In the Moscow hospital, a large group of people are waiting anxiously.

The rescue is still going on. The red light in the operating room means that the doctors are trying their best to save their national leaders.

However, when the doctors came out, they all shook their heads helplessly.

Their great general secretary, Chernenko, just passed away, left the work he loved, and left the great motherland.

Within three years, three general secretaries died in succession, and the position of general secretary is no longer so popular.

Gorbachev looked at the snow outside, calm on the surface, but turbulent in his heart.

The Soviet Union can't go on like this! The Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the country need new blood and a young and strong leader!

In the Andropov era, Gorbachev was already Andropov's successor. Unfortunately, after Andropov's death, Gromyko, Ustinov, Tikhonov, Chernenko and others met privately and the result of the discussion was to elect Chernenko as general secretary.

Why do they still want to do that? The transfer of power in the Soviet Union has not had a fixed procedure until now! In contrast, Gorbachev even began to appreciate the American electoral system, which made the American leaders very young and the whole country was thriving.

Two days later, the Politburo meeting.

"Now that General Secretary Chernenko has passed away, we have lost three general secretaries in three years. We need a young and vigorous person with the ability to reform to be the leader of the Soviet Union. We cannot elect an old and frail person again." Ligachev, a member of the Politburo, said: "Comrade Gorbachev was deeply appreciated by General Secretary Andropov. Gorbachev made great contributions to General Secretary Andropov's reforms. Now, he is still young and can fully assume the task of leading the Soviet Union."

Hearing his words, Moscow Party Secretary Grishin could not help but frown. He had always coveted the position of General Secretary, but he was already 70 years old. Although he was in good health, he was old after all.

"Yes, I also propose that Comrade Gorbachev be the General Secretary." Another person spoke.

Gromyko, the veteran of six dynasties! Hearing that he had also expressed his position, Grishin knew that he was afraid that he would have no chance.

Gromyko is now the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He has experienced the Stalin era, the Malenkov era, the Khrushchev era, the Brezhnev era, the Andropov era, and the recent Chernenko era! He has been in the Politburo for many years and his words carry a lot of weight. When Andropov and Chernenko came to power, Gromyko fully supported them.

Last time, it was Gromyko who proposed Chernenko, which made Chernenko the General Secretary. Now, his support carries a lot of weight.

Sure enough, after Gromyko finished speaking, Defense Minister Marshal Sergei Sokolov also expressed his opinion and supported Gorbachev.

The dust settled, and no one expressed opposition. In this way, Gorbachev finally became the General Secretary of the Soviet Union and will lead this huge country.

Although he took the position of General Secretary, Gorbachev felt that he was walking on thin ice. How to reform this country was the biggest problem he faced.

Now, the Soviet Union has been unable to make ends meet and has been completely dependent on borrowing. At the same time, the Soviet Union is still engaged in large-scale battles in Afghanistan.

It can be said that the current situation of the Soviet Union is largely caused by the Afghan war.

Therefore, just a few days after taking over the position of General Secretary, Gorbachev called Marshal Sergei Leonidovich Sokolov.

Last year, Marshal Ustinov died and Sokolov, the first deputy minister of defense, took over his position. Sokolov is also a tough guy in the Soviet military.

Born in 1911, he is now in his seventies. He experienced the Great Patriotic War and rose in rank until he was awarded the rank of general and served as the first deputy minister of the Soviet Ministry of Defense in 1967. This is a person with rich practical experience and superb military knowledge. He was the right-hand man of Marshal Ustinov during his tenure as Minister of Defense.

Moreover, the most important thing on Sokolov's resume is the Afghan War. On December 27, 1979, he entered Afghanistan with the 108th Division of the 40th Army as the commander-in-chief of the front line. From then on, he served as the leader of the Soviet Ministry of Defense's combat command group in Afghanistan. Until he became the Minister of Defense, all his energy was focused on the Afghan battlefield.

He supported Gorbachev's coming to power. Only Gorbachev could save the Soviet Union at this time. Now, the first thing the general secretary did after taking office put a lot of pressure on him.

Following him was Marshal Sergei Fedorovich Akhromeyev, who was the first to formulate the Afghanistan plan.

Compared with the Minister of Defense, Marshal Akhromeyev has a richer resume.

Born in Tambov in 1923, he fought in Leningrad, Stalingrad, and southern Ukraine as a Marine Corps soldier and grassroots officer during the Great Patriotic War. At that time, in the fierce battle of Leningrad, only one out of ten soldiers survived.

That war made him a firm supporter of the Soviet Union. In later generations, when the Soviet Union collapsed, he chose to commit suicide and die for his country. He was a respectable soldier.

In 1979, he was responsible for the comprehensive plan to invade Afghanistan. This plan was perfectly implemented, killing the Hafizullah Amin regime and supporting the pro-Soviet regime. Akhromeyev proposed that the Soviet army should take advantage of the victory and occupy western Pakistan in one go, so that the Soviet Union could get access to the Indian Ocean.

If his plan was implemented at that time, the dream of the polar bear would have been realized, and at that time, Pakistan had no ability to resist. The Soviet Union was at its peak, so it was just a matter of taking it. Would the United States dare to start a war?

Unfortunately, Brezhnev did not agree.

In 1983, Akhromeyev was promoted from the rank of general to marshal.

And now, the words of General Secretary Gorbachev in front of him are simply a blasphemy against the Soviet army.

"Our war in Afghanistan has been going on for six years. In addition to dragging down our economy, what have we gained now?" (To be continued ~^~)
