Colonial Suit

#43 - Wasteland Mutation

Blood Pupil stayed in the villa for three days, enjoying the luxurious life that Black Bear once had. On the early morning of the third day, he boarded the armored vehicle that had been waiting for a long time and left Shelter '19.

This departure was completely different from the last time. He carried an astonishing wealth that ordinary people could not accumulate in a lifetime—a full five thousand gold Weikes, enough for him to squander until he died. It was truly ironic that Black Bear had prepared for these things for a long time, going through all kinds of hardships, only to ultimately benefit Blood Pupil. Perhaps he would not be willing even at the moment of his death.

Sitting on the turret of the armored vehicle, feeling the roughness of the wasteland wind, Blood Pupil's expression was calm. Beneath his feet, the 37mm rapid-fire cannon of the armored vehicle emitted a cold luster.

"Master, which direction are we going?" Kobi's inquiry came from the front. This strong man crammed himself into the narrow driver's seat, unable to stretch his limbs, but he seemed very excited, probably because he had never driven such an advanced 'big toy'. Kobi now couldn't wait to drift a few times in the wasteland.

This guy's driving skills were indeed as he said, very skilled, skilled enough to do seventy-yard speeding at any time in the old era.

"Go north." Blood Pupil was still sitting on the turret, his eyes unmoving.

"North? That's Lord Koster's territory," Kobi muttered, somewhat puzzled.

"Yes. That's where I'm going."

"Why? My master. Although I know you are strong, I still want to remind you. Lord Koster is a very powerful lord. Absolutely not comparable to Black Bear. If you go to his territory, it will be troublesome. After all, you just killed one of his capable subordinates."

"No need to worry, just do your job." Blood Pupil flatly rejected Kobi's advice, then stomped on the roof of the armored vehicle with his foot. "Are you scared, Kobi?"

"Haha, are you kidding? How could I be scared?" Kobi laughed loudly, answering with a nonchalant expression, but after lowering his head, he muttered to himself.

"I am Kobi, the strong, the Kobi with nerves as tough as old tree roots. I won't be afraid of anything. Right? Not afraid, right? Afraid?"

"Ha. I won't be afraid…"

"Afraid? No way… Afraid…?"

The armored vehicle turned north amidst Kobi's muttering, bumping along…

It must be said that although traveling in the wasteland means facing various dangers and harsh environments, the scenery is not bad. Everywhere are the remains left after the great destruction, coupled with the sky full of strong winds and flying yellow sand, giving people a feeling of the old American West's great desert. After the armored vehicle traveled continuously for two days, it finally discovered a semi-abandoned oasis. And unfortunately, something also happened at the same time.

They were out of gas.

Fuel is one of the rarest resources in the post-apocalyptic world. They had already filled the fuel tank when they left Shelter '19, but they didn't expect to encounter a single gathering point in two days, thus losing the opportunity to refuel. The armored vehicle struggled to drive to the edge of the oasis and stopped. Kobi jumped out of the driver's cabin and collapsed to the ground.

"God, I hate unprepared trips. You know, I should have prepared more fuel. But why are there only weapons and gold Weikes in the cargo hold, and not the fuel drums I most wanted to see?"

"I don't know. But this should be your job. You failed in your duty," Blood Pupil said expressionlessly as he also stepped out of the vehicle.

"Oh. I'm sorry." Kobi secretly stuck out his tongue, making a strange expression. After this period of contact, he had gradually figured out Blood Pupil's temper. It could be said that he was easy to get along with when there was no hostility. So Kobi was not as afraid of Blood Pupil as he was at the beginning.

Fortunately, the two had already entered the oasis at this moment. There was a water source next to them, so there was no need to worry about survival. Kobi climbed into the carriage and carried out large bundles of camping equipment. The two set up two tents by the water. Then Kobi dug out a few cans of meat.

There wasn't much food left in the car. This was thanks to Blood Pupil's amazing appetite. After absorbing the new unit through this armor, he could eat even more. One meal required a normal person's food for a day. So Kobi had been trying to eat less these days, leaving the food to Blood Pupil.

Kobi fetched some water by the water and then did some testing. Luckily, the water quality here was level six, meaning it could be drunk after careful filtration. This was much better than he had initially thought. Kobi happily opened the can, dumped it all into an iron pot, and then poured in the filtered water. After lighting a bonfire and cooking it for a while, it would be a good lunch.

After busying himself for a while, an enticing aroma quickly emerged from the pot. Kobi was excitedly about to call Blood Pupil to eat when he noticed that Blood Pupil had stood up at some point and was frowning as he listened to something.

"Master!"

"Quiet." Blood Pupil made a silencing gesture, his eyes cast into the distance. "Did you hear anything?"

"No." Kobi scratched the back of his head in confusion, seemingly strange at Blood Pupil's statement. This was the wasteland, what else could be heard besides the howling of the wind?

"No, I definitely heard it." Blood Pupil clenched his fist, confirming his judgment. "In that direction, there are calls of mutant vultures."

"Ah?" Kobi was dumbfounded. The gathering of mutant vultures meant that something must have happened over there. Could it be that there were a large number of corpses in the direction Blood Pupil had indicated?

"Go take a look." Kobi stood up, took an assault rifle from the car, slung it over his shoulder, and followed Blood Pupil in that direction.

The two moved very quickly, and soon they saw the shadows of vultures circling in the sky. As Blood Pupil had said, a lot of mutant vultures had gathered on a desert area in front of them. Although this greedy creature had a certain amount of attack power after mutation, its nature was still greedy and timid. Kobi only fired a few shots into the sky and scared them away. Then, a disgusting scene appeared before their eyes.

Not far ahead on a patch of desert, hundreds of human corpses lay scattered. Brown bloodstains were everywhere. There were also several charred car wrecks next to them. The bloody stench wafted over with the wind, making one want to vomit.

These corpses were already somewhat rotten. They looked like they had been dead for some time, but it was still possible to see that they had put up a fierce resistance before they died. Some of the corpses still held crude weapons in their hands. Kobi covered his nose and walked into the scene, barely managing not to throw up. He carefully looked around for a while and then returned to Blood Pupil's side.

"Ah, it's terrible. This is a caravan. It looks like they were attacked by a large number of mutant creatures. There aren't many bullet holes. Only a few were fired from their own weapons. Old double-barreled shotguns, using buckshot. But it looks like their resistance was ineffective. Everyone was killed. Old people, women, even children. It shouldn't be robbers who did this, otherwise they wouldn't have killed these young girls too."

Blood Pupil didn't speak, but silently walked through the scene. When he passed a charred car wreck, he kicked it. The car wreck crashed to the side. Blood Pupil found several flattened corpses underneath. In addition, he saw huge open wounds on several corpses next to them, as if they had been brutally chopped by a guillotine, almost severing their bodies.

"…Are there many mutant creatures here? And these wounds remind me of amputation beasts, but amputation beasts wouldn't have so much power."

"There will always be mutant creatures in the wasteland, Master. It can only be said that they were unlucky. They just happened to encounter a group of mutant creatures coming to the oasis to drink. As for the wounds, who knows how many new creatures are mutating in the wasteland every day? This may be a newly emerged species. Looks pretty good, maybe it can sell for a good price?"

Kobi shrugged and made a harmless joke. Actually, he was just saying it. If he really encountered a newly emerged mutant beast, he would definitely run as far as possible. Unfamiliar creatures are always dangerous, and Kobi didn't want to lose his life here. He still had a lot of money he hadn't spent yet.

But he didn't notice that, just as he was joking, a sandbag suddenly bulged on a piece of sandy ground behind him. Immediately afterward, a black shadow silently pounced out from within. This black shadow was extremely fast, appearing behind Kobi in almost an instant. But Kobi was completely unaware.

"Careful." Blood Pupil in front, however, seemed to be able to see the scene behind him, and suddenly turned around. He reached out and grabbed towards Kobi. His speed was as fast as lightning. Before Kobi could even blink, he heard a shrill scream in his ear. A black shadow that looked like a human child was grabbed alive by Blood Pupil.

It was a humanoid creature covered in fine scales all over its body. Its nature was extremely fierce. Even when caught by Blood Pupil, it continued to struggle, making inhuman screams. Just looking at the blue light on its fingernails was enough to know that they were covered in poison. Kobi was immediately startled.

He knew that he had almost been pounced on by this thing just now. This thing was so insidious, if he was pounced on, it definitely wouldn't be good. Kobi was really scared just thinking about it.

"What the hell is this thing!" Kobi shouted with a pale face. He reached out and pulled the bolt, pointing the muzzle at the humanoid creature's head.

"Don't know." Blood Pupil narrowed his eyes and observed for a while, then said. "But I'm sure this thing is one of the culprits who killed these travelers. Because I saw that the skin on the faces of some corpses was blue, obviously the same color as the one on his fingernails."

"Damn it! Doesn't that mean we're being targeted too?" Kobi exclaimed in horror.
