Chronicles of the Green Vine: A Mortal’s Path to Immortality
Chapter 6: Weird Vines
The next day, Zhang Ling slowly opened his eyes. His face was a little pale, and he felt disoriented as he listened to the unknown birds singing in the distance before he finally woke up.
Am I still alive?
Zhang Ling sat on the ground, looking at the mess around him. The fire had long gone out, and the corpse of a gray wolf lay on the ground.
He looked at the injury on his calf. The wound was black, but fortunately, his actions yesterday had been effective, and he had finally stopped the bleeding. He moved his right leg slightly, and a burst of pain came.
Then he checked all the large and small wounds on his body. Although the scratches on his chest were torn, the wounds were not deep and had stopped bleeding, but the wound on his arm had burst open.
Zhang Ling could only tear off some strips of cloth from his clothes and simply bandage the wounds on his body.
After dealing with the injuries on his body, he was exhausted and covered in sweat.
Now he was hungry, so he had to solve the food problem before thinking about other things.
Zhang Ling rekindled a fire and used his long knife to cut off a section of wolf leg and put it on the fire to roast.
After eating a meal of roasted wolf meat, he stood up and moved around. The wound on his calf throbbed from time to time, and he limped as he walked. With his current physical condition, it was too dangerous to wander around in the mountains.
It seemed that he couldn't go any further for the time being. He planned to rest for a few days and leave when his injuries were better.
Yesterday, he was attacked and injured by this gray wolf, but the wolf's meat also solved the food crisis.
Then, Zhang Ling cut up the wolf meat with his long knife. After more than an hour, he finished cutting the wolf meat. There were more than thirty pounds of edible meat on the gray wolf.
With this wolf meat, he wouldn't have to worry about food for more than ten days.
Looking at the large area of blood on the ground, the smell of blood was very strong. He couldn't stay here for long, so it was better to find another place.
Then Zhang Ling dug a pit in the ground, buried some bones and other inedible things, cleaned up the blood stains on the ground, and limped away.
Zhang Ling wrapped the wolf meat in wolf skin, carried the bamboo tube, and headed forward with his long knife, looking for a place to rest temporarily.
After half an hour, he found a crack in the mountain wall below. The crack was not big, just enough for him to pass through.
Zhang Ling went in to take a look. The space inside was not large. After walking in, he reached the end in two steps. The space was about two zhang in size. It seemed to be a natural crack in the mountain wall.
He was immediately overjoyed and decided to settle down in this place.
This mountain wall crack was quite hidden, and some withered yellow vines hung down, covering the crack.
He was able to find this mountain wall crack because he had been walking along the mountain wall. In fact, he had not gone far, and it was lucky that he found this place.
Now he was injured, and this place was both hidden and sheltered from the wind and rain, making it a good choice.
Zhang Ling took everything inside and then busied himself. First, he cut some wood with his long knife not far away and roasted wolf meat in the cave.
By the time the roasted wolf meat was finished, it was already night. The wolf meat was roasted dry and a little burnt, but this would allow it to be stored for a few more days.
He also used a few thick wooden sticks to prop up the crack. Even if a wild beast found him, it could be blocked for a while.
In the next few days, Zhang Ling spent his time in this mountain wall crack. With food, his injuries recovered quickly.
This day, Zhang Ling lay in the cave to rest after eating his fill, thinking that although his injuries had not fully recovered, his movements were not affected much. He planned to leave in another two or three days.
Roar… Roar
Suddenly, he heard a roar coming from outside, followed by a series of wild animal roars.
Zhang Ling quickly grabbed his long knife and quickly came to the mountain crack, looking outside.
After only one glance, his face showed astonishment. He saw a yellow-haired big worm not far away. It was a yellow-haired tiger.
This kind of wild beast was the king of the deep forest, extremely fierce and almost without natural enemies. If he had encountered a tiger a few days ago, he would not have had the slightest resistance.
At this moment, the tiger was actually at a disadvantage, and there were streaks of blood on its body. Zhang Ling couldn't believe his eyes at what was fighting the tiger, and thought he was seeing a monster.
What was fighting the tiger was not a fierce wild beast, nor a human, but a long, black-green vine.
Each attack of the long vine was like a steel whip, leaving a deep mark on the ground and stirring up a cloud of dust.
The tiger's body was already covered with vines. Although its claws and fangs were sharp, the vines were extremely tough and could not be broken by the tiger's strength.
Seeing this scene, Zhang Ling's understanding was subverted by this strange vine.
Vines were plants and could not move, but it was attacking prey like a snake, and its prey was still a fierce tiger.
Moreover, it was almost winter, and this vine was still green.
Squeak… Squeak
Suddenly Zhang Ling heard some sounds again. The sound was very close to him, and before he could react, something fell from above his head, scaring him.
The thing first fell on his head, then fell to the ground. He looked down and saw that it was an animal about the size of a gray-haired wild rabbit.
It was a mountain rat, Zhang Ling recognized it. This kind of animal was very common in the mountains.
The mountain rat on the ground seemed to be frightened. It rolled on the ground and ran towards the cave behind him.
Zhang Ling's face suddenly darkened. The vine not far away was hunting a tiger, and he didn't want to attract their attention.
Just as he was about to go inside and get rid of this mountain rat, he saw a black shadow flash in front of him with a soft thud. Another mountain rat fell from the mountain wall.
Then several black shadows appeared in front of him, all of them fat mountain rats. These guys fell to the ground and squeaked frantically, running around like crazy.
What was happening? Zhang Ling looked up at the mountain wall above his head with some doubt, and his face changed drastically.
He saw another dark vine three or four zhang above his head, rolling up a large mountain rat and moving on the mountain wall.
There was more than one strange vine, Zhang Ling was horrified. His face broke out in a cold sweat.
No, the vine was so close to him, but he didn't notice it. He couldn't stay here any longer.
Zhang Ling quickly returned to the mountain crack. The mountain rat that rushed in was running around, but he didn't have time to care about these at the moment.
First, he grabbed his long knife, then stuffed the remaining roasted wolf meat into his arms, and rushed outside carrying two bamboo tubes filled with water.
His choice was like those mountain rats, running wildly into the distance. After all, these vines were too strange, and even tigers were no match. He didn't think he could deal with them.
Zhang Ling limped forward, and the vine on the mountain wall seemed to have poked a mountain rat nest. From time to time, several mountain rats fell from the mountain wall behind him.
The dark vines rolled up the mountain rats and fell to the ground, and the long vines shook and flew away several mountain rats on the ground.
Raising half of the vine, it seemed to be moving in the direction Zhang Ling was running, as if it had some intention.
Zhang Ling ran for his life, suddenly feeling a cold wind blowing behind his head, and something flew past him.
With a muffled thud, a mountain rat smashed into the front, bloody and blurred, which made his footsteps pause, and then he felt a pain in his foot.
A section of dark vine had climbed onto his calf, Zhang Ling's face changed drastically, and he waved the long knife in his hand, slashing at the vine on his foot.
To his despair, his full blow only drew a crack in the vine and shed some black liquid.
Zhang Ling stubbornly slashed the vine again, hoping to cut off the vine and escape, but the vine that wrapped around him pulled back, and his body fell to the ground. The vine dragged him backwards.
Zhang Ling was smashed with a bloody head, and several wounds were scraped on his body. No matter how hard he tried to chop the vine on his feet, the vine would not let go.
Before long, Zhang Ling fainted with injuries all over his body. The strange vine dragged his body on the ground and moved in one direction.
In the following period of time, the mountain forest rang with bursts of wild animal howls, and the animals in the mountains seemed to have gone crazy.
And the culprit of all this was the strange vine.
