172 – Side Story – Those Who Must Be Cherished

It’s been about two weeks since we returned from our honeymoon.

The trip was the best and it made me realize why people spend more money to travel abroad. Everything from the food to the surroundings changed so every day was fresh.

As a bonus, I recently created a YouTube channel, so I was thinking about filming a video to use there, but Yuna changed her mind in the middle and it fell through. She said that she wanted to keep the honeymoon as a memory for just the two of them and not share it with anyone.

I quickly forgot all about the hard work I put into preparing the filming equipment because of her wonderful and lovely words. It seems like my wife’s speaking skills are getting better and better.

Leaving Yuna behind, who said she had something to do in the morning breeze and headed off somewhere, I went down from the bedroom and headed to the first floor. It was because there was a guest.

“I told you, you don’t have to come all the way to my house. And why are you carrying so much luggage…?”

As my mother carried the luggage she had packed in the foyer of the mansion, my mouth was filled with words.

What kind of quantity is this? Kimchi is one thing, but abalone, seaweed, beef… All kinds of ingredients are in the shopping cart. I wonder if they robbed the entire supermarket.

“It might be time for our baby to start taking care of his health soon, so we need to prepare for this.”

“Oh my, what a fuss…”

A soft sigh escaped my lips as I realized that the reason was none other than the possibility of Yuna’s pregnancy.

If someone saw you, they’d think you were already pregnant. If you had prepared after hearing the news, you wouldn’t have said anything.

Anyway, Yuna, you must be happy because you sang a song about missing your mom. It looks like a lot of food will be prepared in the morning, but if it’s my wife, it won’t be a big problem.

“Honey! Where have you been!? I’ve been looking for you for so long…!”

“Oh, I’m sorry. Mom came for a moment to bring some luggage…”

As I entered the house, I opened my eyes wide at the sound of Yuna’s screams, and offered her an apology. Judging from the atmosphere, it seemed like something urgent had come up in the morning.

As I belatedly gave her a reasonable excuse, Yuna, who was running down the stairs to the second floor, saw her mother standing blankly in the hallway and ran towards me with sparkling eyes.

Oh, look at the force.

“Mommy!”

By the way, after getting married, Yuna changed the way she called her mother from aunt to mom. At first, she called her mother, but her mother said it sounded too formal, so she told her to just call her mom.

He’s a guy who’s always joked since he was little that he wished his mom was his mom, so he’s been like that ever since he accepted it.

Anyone who sees this would think it’s a reunion of separated families.

“My daughter-in-law, it’s been a while. How have you been?”

“Yes! I’ve been doing well. I was just about to go see my mom because Siyoon called me…!”

“Huh? At my house?”

My mother, with her eyes wide open, looked at me and asked silently, “What happened?” As this was something I had never heard of before, all I could do was shrug my shoulders.

Did you have any plans to come to my house today? Or is that just empty talk? But Yuna isn’t the type to talk empty talk like that.

“But Yuna, didn’t you just find me a little while ago?”

“Oh, that’s right! Honey, look at this quickly!”

When I asked her why she had been calling me so desperately a little while ago, thinking that I should tell her the story one by one, Yuna took something out of her pajama pocket with a proud expression.

It was a long, stick-shaped object that was somewhat familiar to me. I hadn’t seen Yuna use it, but I had seen it on the Internet and other places.

It’s none other than a pregnancy test.

“…uh?”

“Hey, Yuna, is this true?”

And the moment I saw the two lines drawn in the middle, my mother and I lost consciousness at the same time.

Wait, this is definitely two lines… .

Wow!

“Okay, honey?”

Before I could even realize the reality, I walked over to Yuna and hugged her. It was rare for me to suddenly initiate physical contact with my mother, so a flustered voice came out of Yuna’s mouth.

But this was the only way to most earnestly convey my current feelings.

Yes, I finally became a father today.

***

The news of Yuna’s pregnancy spread far and wide for about a month. A lot happened during that time.

First of all, the outpouring of congratulatory messages from Yuna’s fans was beyond words. They sent letters containing congratulatory messages in the form of rolling papers, and the content was just so much.

Of course, I didn’t just pass over every single word from Yuna or Nana, but read them all carefully. They were all words of gratitude.

And the second thing that happened was a bit of fun news. It was the first time in a long time that I saw my dad cry.

I don’t remember it well because it happened when I was very young, but my father cried only once when my grandfather passed away when I was young, and I haven’t seen him cry since.

I guess she must have been very emotional. I heard later that my mother said she felt overwhelmed with emotion when she first got pregnant with me. I wonder if I will be like that later.

Anyway, amidst all the congratulations, it’s been about 6 weeks since our baby took root in my stomach.

I heard that the 6th week of pregnancy is quite significant because this is the time when you can directly check the baby through ultrasound.

In some cases, it may be faster, but usually, you can check it if you go at this time.

“The ultrasound examination is finished. Please wait outside for a moment.”

“thank you.”

And for this ultrasound examination, we went to the OB/GYN together today.

In fact, the reason Yuna chose this slow time as the first confirmation period was because it was the time when it was possible to confirm whether or not they were twins.

“Ugh, honey, I’m shaking. What should I do?”

Unlike me, who was filled with anticipation at the thought of finally seeing our baby for the first time, Yuna was holding onto my thigh, nervous for some reason.

“If you keep shaking like this, what are you going to do when you give birth later?”

“I, I don’t know. I’m just nervous. I knew it was in my stomach, but this is my first time seeing it in person.”

“I hope you’re growing up well. Don’t be too nervous.”

It is truly a rare sight to see a celestial star who does not tremble even on a concert stage in front of tens of thousands of people trembling just before an ultrasound scan.

I should write it in the comments section of the video I upload to YouTube later. Of course, Yuna will be embarrassed and ask why I’m telling her that, but the fans will like it because it’s unexpected.

“Han Yu-na, please come into the examination room.”

“yes.”

Soon it was Yuna’s turn, and we headed to the examination room together with excited hearts.

As I knocked on the door and entered, a female doctor with a very kind impression was sitting there. For some reason, she seemed like the president… No, I think that’s what Aunt Mirae will feel like when she gets older.

“Welcome, you are a rare young couple these days.”

I don’t know if it’s because he’s older and doesn’t know Yuna well, or if he’s pretending not to know her on purpose, but thanks to that, the conversation started in a fairly comfortable atmosphere.

“First of all, did you take a pregnancy test?”

“Yes, about six weeks ago… .”

“That’s fortunate. Sometimes, young couples come here and hear about their first pregnancy.”

I don’t know in what sense it is fortunate, but I cautiously guess that it is fortunate in that sense, since it is something that can only be accepted if one is mentally prepared.

“First, I’ll do an ultrasound to check. You might be very surprised, so please prepare yourself mentally.”

“Huh? Surprised… .”

Surely it’s not like the child is already in trouble or anything.

Just as Yuna and I were about to freeze, a video started streaming from a monitor on the wall.

There, inside a white semicircular space that was presumed to be Yuna’s stomach, there were two black kidney-shaped objects lined up. Inside each of the black kidney beans, there were also white objects placed.

While we were staring blankly at the screen, not knowing what to do, the doctor smiled slightly at us and then suddenly opened his mouth to tell us unexpected news.

“Congratulations, you’re having twins.”

At that moment, my consciousness stopped again, just like when I first heard the news of my pregnancy.

What did you just say? Twins? Are you saying that all those black beans you see over there are our children?

“Twins!? Really, sir?”

Unlike me who was too shocked to speak, Yuna rushed to the doctor and asked him if he was serious. Her eyes were as if she was going to drown someone if he said she was joking.

“Yes, they are twins. If you look here, you can see that there are two amniotic membranes and two chorionic membranes surrounding the babies.”

“Wow, that’s true….”

When I followed the part the doctor had pointed out with the pen, I could finally see the outline. That meant that was the house where the baby was sleeping.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve seen twins in our obstetrics and gynecology department, so it’s a new feeling. I hope you have a healthy birth. Oh, and please make sure to take the two pairs of baby socks we give you when you leave.”

“Thank you, teacher…!”

“thank you.”

I never thought this would really turn out the way Yuna wanted.

After hearing several precautions, we left the examination room with a greeting, holding each other’s hands so as not to let go.

Only then did I see my wife making a V sign as if to say, ‘I won, right?’ and I couldn’t help but smile.

From today onwards, I have not one, but two more people to cherish.

That fact alone made my heart swell with excitement.
