Astral Cockroach

#38 - Angry Grass

Origin Force plants are the highest form of carbon-based life in the plant kingdom, representing the pinnacle of genetic advancement.

Life Seeds are ordinary plant seeds that have undergone genetic modification by the Life Sac, transforming them into Origin Force plants.

Divinely Bestowed Seeds, on the other hand, are Origin Force plants that are born naturally.

When a Divinely Bestowed Seed is nurtured by a Life Sac and undergoes genetic modification, the changes are not as simple as one plus one equals two. It seems a qualitative change occurs, elevating its genetic level a grade above ordinary Life Seeds.

The premature development of a tree spirit, possessing a rudimentary soul, is a capability not found in ordinary Life Seeds or naturally occurring Origin Force plants.

In a flurry, Banbu peeled away the leaves entwined around the cedar sapling and dug out the four ordinary Life Seeds planted not far from the Divinely Bestowed Seed, transplanting them in one go to the edge of the clearing near the cave entrance, 3000 units away.

Looking again, he sensed that the Divinely Bestowed Seed was conveying a sense of triumph and joy, as if arrogantly declaring: 'The entire clearing by the cave entrance is my territory! Whoever dares to encroach, I will kill them!'

Banbu pondered briefly and roughly understood: This is the survival instinct of plants.

Plant growth involves even more intense and brutal competition than in the animal kingdom. Tall plants suppress the short, and strong plants suppress the weak. Above ground, plant branches and leaves crowd and cover each other, vying for sunlight; underground, plant roots crowd each other, competing for water and nutrients.

The growth of Origin Force plants also requires the absorption of Origin Force, leading to competition for this resource as well.

The struggle between plants is a matter of life and death. The loser rots and becomes nourishment for the growth of the victor.

In the vast jungle, with its myriad plants, how many plant seeds are produced each year through flowering and fruiting? Seeds fall to the ground, sprout, and take root, but how many of them manage to grow successfully?

Due to the suppression by mature plants, almost all are eliminated, with only a handful surviving.

Through hundreds of millions of years of evolution and countless generations of natural selection, almost every plant has evolved a survival instinct to attack and kill other plants.

This instinct is even more directly displayed in Divinely Bestowed Seeds.

"Water."

Banbu was lost in thought when he received a relatively clear message from the Divinely Bestowed Seed.

"Holy crap!"

Banbu couldn't help but exclaim.

The Divinely Bestowed Seed had only just been planted, and it had only developed a rudimentary, weak soul, yet it had already learned to demand things. It was practically becoming a spirit!

Banbu lowered his head to examine it carefully. Its unrestrained growth throughout the day had absorbed most of the moisture near its roots, leaving the soil dry, and the rate at which moisture from the surrounding damp soil seeped in was clearly unable to keep up with its absorption rate.

"Water."

The Divinely Bestowed Seed conveyed its intention again, filled with a strong sense of anger, as if blaming Banbu for not taking action.

Banbu ignored it, carefully sensing the state of the Divinely Bestowed Seed. It was in excellent condition, with extraordinarily developed roots and vigorous vitality.

Estimating that it would be fine for one night without water, he flatly refused, sending the message: "No water."

"Water!"

The Divinely Bestowed Seed was furious.

It had a soul, but no brain. A weak soul must rely on a brain to complete various logical thinking processes. Therefore, the Divinely Bestowed Seed was truly a brainless idiot, releasing emotions driven by instinct.

Banbu felt it was necessary to correct this idiot's attitude, at least to make it understand the master-servant relationship between them.

"No water. Sleep."

Banbu sent a blunt message, turned around, and went into the cave to sleep.

Waking up in the morning, he walked out of the cave to check on the growth of the Divinely Bestowed Seed.

One glance was enough to startle Banbu again: the leaf that had been growing along the ground last night, attempting to entwine and strangle the cedar sapling, had withered and died.

He hurried over, carefully sensing it. The vitality of the Divinely Bestowed Seed remained vigorous, and he immediately felt relieved.

Parting the withered grass blade, he discovered that it had sprouted a new, light golden, slender shoot.

After half a night, the moisture from the nearby damp soil had seeped in, and the soil around the roots of the Divinely Bestowed Seed had moderate humidity, with no water shortage. The new shoot was growing well.

The Divinely Bestowed Seed conveyed an angry emotional message to Banbu.

Banbu sent back an angry emotional message.

The Divinely Bestowed Seed sent an even more angry emotional message.

Banbu sent a threatening message of "I'll kill you."

The Divinely Bestowed Seed was frightened and became obedient.

Banbu confirmed that it was fine and ignored it, turning his attention to the problem of the withered leaf. He quickly understood:

The Divinely Bestowed Seed had accumulated nutrients during the day yesterday, and at night, it had gathered momentum. The leaf had grown at an extraordinary speed, with the aim of strangling its competitor. Due to this growth violating the laws of nature, the leaf's structure had functional defects and was destined to lose its root nutrient supply and wither after completing its "killing" mission.

"First eliminate external enemies, then seek development. Truly an arrogant and domineering crazy grass."

Banbu muttered, continuing to check the development of the other Life Seed plants.

The Xun Grass Life Seed had sprouted three new shoots, their tips straight and their leaves green. It seemed that they would develop into three grass stalks, meaning that three ears of Xun Grass seeds could be harvested in the summer.

Since they were still in the germination stage and the roots were not deep, last night's relocation did not have a significant impact on the cedar, Impatiens fruit, white jade mulberry, and Li bamboo seedlings. They had already adapted to the new soil and were growing vigorously.

In the distance, a huge crimson figure sped over and landed at the entrance of the cave.

It was the cliff cedar of Iron Saber Peak, which was patrolling Li Bamboo Peak today.

The cliff cedar looked around and was immediately attracted by the Divinely Bestowed Seed, praising it generously:

"Banbu, your Life Seed has sprouted. This must be the Divinely Bestowed Seed? It's simply too beautiful! A lovely elf, a gift from the True God of Nature!"

Lovely?

Banbu said, "My cedar Life Seed was almost killed by this guy last night. Cliff Cedar, you see, I had to move the other four Life Seeds overnight."

"Oh, so it's a domineering little fellow," Cliff Cedar said. "Banbu, don't be surprised, it's normal, because its growth requires a lot of space and Origin Force. It looks very healthy. You haven't encountered any other trouble, have you?"

Banbu said, "Not yet."

Cliff Cedar said, "Then I must inform you now, cough cough, Banbu, there's a bit of a problem in your territory."

Banbu asked strangely, "What problem?"

Cliff Cedar stretched out its forelimbs, pointed down the mountain, and said, "The bamboo that was cut down in winter hasn't died. After the spring rain, bamboo shoots have emerged and are now growing like crazy."

Banbu said in surprise, "Not dead? How is that possible! They were clearly all cut down."

Cliff Cedar said, "I haven't planted bamboo, and there's no more relevant knowledge in my inherited memories. I don't know why this is happening."

Cliff Cedar asked, "You don't like bamboo, do you? Ma Yu's idea is to have you learn from the Iron Saber Mountain Master and plant a large number of Iron Saber trees on Li Bamboo Peak, developing Iron Saber trees. Is that what you're planning to do too?"

Banbu pondered and considered.

Initially, he did plan to plant and cultivate Iron Saber trees on a large scale on Li Bamboo Peak, and it would be best to get rare tree species such as Red Firm trees and expand the planting. Once new and better tree species were cultivated, he could earn a considerable income just from selling the seeds.

The success of the Iron Saber Mountain Master and the Red Firm County Princess was right in front of him. Starting from the shoulders of giants, he could climb higher.

However, Banbu vaguely realized that Ma Yu, the Iron Saber Mountain Master, Pu Tao, the Cliff Cedar in front of him, and even himself, seemed to have underestimated the development potential of bamboo trees!

The fact that the Golden Bamboo Mountain Master was able to gain a foothold in the Brocade Screen Mountains by relying on bamboo species was probably not a matter of luck. There must be something unique about it that was not known to the public.

Seeing that Banbu was not speaking, Cliff Cedar continued, "It's not a big problem. I'll notify the Iron Saber Mountain Master, and the Iron Saber Mountain Master will organize mountain warriors to come and help. Together, we can help you pull out all the bamboo shoots. It's a simple job that can be done in a day or two."

Banbu shook his antennae and said seriously, "The fact that these bamboos can miraculously recover must be the will of the True God of Nature. Why not let them develop? Besides, I am already living independently, and I am embarrassed to trouble everyone again for such a small matter."
