Chapter 4 An unexpected escape route
"What's wrong? You're talking!"
After following Hope for a long distance, Karl asked out of breath why the other party was pulling him to run away.
He could see the eagerness on Hope's face and knew that she must have discovered something, so he ran with the other party with all his strength at the beginning without asking anything.
But now the two of them have run far away, and because Karl is wearing a full set of relatively heavy armor, his physical strength can no longer keep up.
"Hoo~, hoo~, the people coming to attack here are the Ogre Warlord from Gray Wall City and a Mind Flayer Psion! We, we must escape quickly, otherwise..."
At this point, Hope stopped, leaving only the sound of heavy breathing.
"How about otherwise?"
Seeing Hope suddenly stop, Karl was so anxious that sweat broke out on his forehead.
Did you break the law by saying the second half of the sentence together?
Looking at Karl with a dazed look, Hope seemed to have suddenly suffered from Alzheimer's disease and forgot what he wanted to say.
Karl was stunned for a moment, and then realized that the other party was affected by psychic energy again.
The two of them didn't conduct any reconnaissance when they were running just now, so they might have been targeted by the Brain-Eating Monster again.
"Damn it! These disgusting guys are so disgusting!"
After grabbing Hope, Karl directly put the opponent on his shoulders and continued to run forward.
If the brain-eating monster wants to occupy a person's brain, it needs to make the other person still. If the other person moves, its psychic teleportation will not be able to locate it.
After running some distance further, the psychic energy derived from the mind flayer larvae allowed Carl to sense the current location of the brain-eating monster.
As a target parasitized by the mind flayer larvae, Carl is considered a "neutral" unit to the Brain Eaters. As long as Carl does not take the initiative to attack, they will not attack Carl.
The psychic powers of the mind flayer larvae were also gradually mastered by Karl because the opponent fell into dormancy just after completing its parasitism.
When Carl rushed to the location of the Brain Eater, he found that the Brain Eater that exerted psychic influence on Hope was stuck by a boulder.
This is probably why the other party was so anxious to try to control Hope after becoming aware of her existence.
Picking up one of Hope's hand axes, Karl raised the knife and chopped the Brain Eater into a puddle of mud.
At the moment the other party died, Hope on Carl's shoulder shuddered and woke up from his dazed state.
"Otherwise, we will either be enslaved by the mind flayer psions, or sent to the processing factory by the ogre warlords to be made into military rations!"
While saying what he had not finished just now, Hope blinked and asked somewhat belatedly:
"I was controlled by the Brain Eater just now?"
Putting down Hope, Karl nodded and returned the hand ax to the other party.
"Aren't the two guys you mentioned good friends?"
"There are few good things about Zhuomu's guys."
After giving Karl a meaningful look, Hope sighed, with a complicated look on his face.
Zhuom, also known as the country of monsters.
Most of the residents here are humanoid monsters such as tauren, gnolls, trolls, and ogres. Many tieflings gradually migrated here because they were discriminated against by humans.
‘Looking at Hope’s expression, she was probably born in Drom, maybe from Gray Wall City. ’
With these thoughts flashing through his mind, Karl calmed down and asked Hope: "Then where are we going to run next?"
Since both sides of the battle are not good people, they must hide as far away as possible.
Just as they were talking, a violent vibration interrupted their thoughts.
The ceiling of the corridor began to collapse in large areas.
With quick eyesight and quick hands, Carl dragged Hope and hid next to the body of the Brain Eater. The rock blocking the Brain Eater helped the two of them resist the damage of many gravels.
The violent shaking continued, and with a "click~", Carl and Hope suddenly felt their feet empty.
Due to the violent vibrations and falling rocks, the floor of the corridor collapsed!
"Hold on to me!"
Grabbing Carl's armor collar with one hand, Hope kicked the nearby wall as he fell, causing the two of them to fly to the side.
The falling rock produced extremely destructive force due to the acceleration of gravity. When it hit the floor of the next floor, it actually broke through it again.
In this way, it smashed through five or six floors before finally settling down.
"This base actually has a next level?"
When the shaking gradually stopped, Karl had the courage to look under the hole.
Compared to the upper level, the passage below looks much simpler.
If the Mind Flayer base is a well-decorated house, then the following floors can only be regarded as authentic.
"The traces of this excavation may have been left by the Mind Flayer controlling the slave mining. Don't look at it. We have to escape as soon as possible."
Without paying too much attention to the situation below, Hope looked up at the hole above, thinking about how to jump up.
But Karl was still curious about the tunnel below, so he lay down at the hole made by the rock and looked down.
The hanging hair swayed slightly, and Karl vaguely felt a cool breeze.
This made Karl, who had just experienced a wild run and fight, breathe out a comfortable breath.
But he also knew that now was not the time to take it easy, so he was ready to get up and help Hope.
'etc! breeze? ’
The air in underground caves usually doesn't circulate very well.
But Carl was sure that he had just felt the movement of the airflow.
Taking off his iron gloves, Carl dipped his fingers in saliva, and then stretched his hands to the hole below.
Because of the moisture, Carl's perception of the airflow became more sensitive.
"Hope! Come here! There is an airflow here! There may be a hole leading to the outside world below!"
When Carl confirmed the existence of the airflow again, he immediately informed Hope of his discovery.
The battle outside was still going on. Even if the two could get out, they would most likely be exposed to the sight of the warring parties.
So instead of thinking about how to go up, the survival rate of exploring downwards might be higher.
And in Carl's opinion, this tunnel might be a secret passage built for the captured mind flayer to him, so that he could escape in the current situation.
As for why the mind flayer didn't use the tunnel to escape now?
This is not within Carl's consideration for the time being.
People at the end of their ropes always give themselves a little hope, even if this hope is mixed with fantasy.
"Are you sure?"
Hope licked her fingers and reached her hand over the hole. As expected, she felt the air flow going downward.
After struggling for a moment, she turned to Carl and said, "Let's go down and take a look. Even if there is no way out, it's better than running around in the base like a headless fly!"
After saying that, the girl jumped to the next level first, then raised her head, ready to catch Carl.
