American comics: Starting with Luke the Maker
#149 - Convergence, consensus, and loss of connection
"Wow, look who it is? You finally decided to come out of that lab of yours for some fresh air?" Just as Luke stepped off the aircraft into the wind, a flamboyant man with sunglasses leaned on him from the deck of the aerial mothership. He slung an arm around Luke's shoulders, pulling him close and teasingly said.
"No, I was woken up in the bedroom of my villa," Luke corrected Stark.
"Your life is too boring, really. I suggest you cultivate some hobbies besides research. Life is so short, you'll regret it when you're old if you haven't indulged in pleasure," Tony said, playfully patting him on the shoulder near his ear.
"Where's your suit? That suit you always wear? Where is it stored?" Luke had developed a high resistance to Tony's attempts to entice him into entertainment, which he only dared to do so boldly because Pepper and Yina weren't around. To avoid Tony's endless brainwashing, he tactfully changed the subject.
"No, no, no, do you remember that symbiote you gave me? It recently had two little babies, both good kids! Because of that, my symbiote suit has been upgraded to the second generation. I think maybe only nanotechnology can compete with symbiote materials. Look at this portability," Tony, predictably, was piqued by Luke's interest and enthusiastically began showing off his new toy.
His suit transformed with his movements and words, unfolding piece by piece until, before Luke's eyes, it changed from a suit into a black Iron Man armor. The black, stern-looking mask flipped open, revealing Tony's slightly smug face.
"What do you think?" Tony asked.
"Great," Luke gave his sincere evaluation.
"I thought you could praise it a little longer."
"Brevity is the soul of wit. Hello, Dr. Banner," Luke bypassed Stark, who still wanted to say something, and looked at Bruce Banner, who was approaching them, fiddling with a pen in his hand, seemingly hesitant about whether he should interrupt the conversation.
"Hello," Dr. Banner seemed surprised that Luke recognized him and greeted him first, so he appeared a little flustered. After offering a dry greeting, he seemed to forget what he wanted to say and stood there blankly.
"Is the ring working well?" Luke's eyes glanced down, his gaze falling on a familiar ring on the other's right-hand finger, and he guessed the other's intention.
"Great," Banner replied, using Luke's perfunctory words to Stark, seemingly taking Luke's "brevity is the soul of wit" to heart. Seeing that Luke didn't show the same aggressive edge as Stark, Banner relaxed a lot. "It's really a great invention. You know, I've traveled all over the world, to various countries, just trying to find a way to calm myself down, but it's difficult. How did you invent this technology? Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to pry into your technology, I'm just very curious and very grateful."
Bruce's words became a little disordered towards the end, and he seemed a little embarrassed, clearly because he was too excited.
"It's okay, explaining it would probably take a while. I can only say that the emergence of this technology is based on some preliminary research results. If you're willing, you can come to Hyperion when you have time, and we can chat slowly in my lab," Luke said.
"That would be great," Dr. Banner's face showed surprise at Luke's expression of goodwill.
"Time to go inside," Agent Natasha Romanoff walked over in a black bodysuit and said to the others. People were securing the aircraft on the deck. The deck beneath their feet began to shake slightly, and the roar of engines filled the air.
...
Bridge.
Nick Fury, wearing a black eye patch, was looking sternly at the scattered group in front of him, especially Stark, who was like a thorn, stirring up Banner's and the Captain's emotions. He felt a little helpless.
"Everyone!" Nick said loudly, "I invited you here to help solve the problem, not to let you satirize each other and then get angry and argue."
"Problem, what problem?" Thor interjected, wearing his Asgardian armor and holding his beloved Mjolnir. "Find Loki and tell me the address, and I'll teach him a lesson."
"A madman who wants to invade the world?" Tony whistled.
"Show some respect, he's my brother, the son of Odin, the King of Asgard," Thor raised his hammer and glared at him with dissatisfaction.
"He directly or indirectly killed at least hundreds of people and destroyed an underground research base of S.H.I.E.L.D.," Nick added quietly from the side.
"Actually, he's adopted, not an Asgardian," Thor awkwardly retracted his hammer. He had heard that Asgard and the mages of Midgard were in close and important cooperation, and S.H.I.E.L.D. was one of the collaborators. With the victims complaining to his face, Thor, who had changed a lot compared to the past and had learned to think with his brain instead of his muscles under the influence of his girlfriend, could only throw his beloved brother out to bear the brunt of the anger. Anyway, he deserved to be scolded.
"Doctor, you are an expert in the field of gamma rays, and we need your expertise to help us find the Tesseract," Nick ignored the shrinking Thor and focused his attention on Dr. Banner, who was walking with Luke. He stepped forward and briefly explained the current situation to Banner. Of course, Natasha had already told him a lot of information on the way, so Dr. Banner knew very well why Nick had come to him.
"You're saying that the Tesseract is constantly emitting gamma rays, and you want me to use that to help you find it, right?" Banner summarized Nick's meaning.
"Yes," Nick nodded.
"I want to confirm again, you need my knowledge, not the monster inside me?" Banner asked for confirmation.
"Yes, in fact, we don't lack combat power right now. If necessary, you don't have to go to the battlefield, just stay here until the end, as long as you can help find the Tesseract," Nick replied equally seriously.
"Sir, we've lost contact with the base located at XX."
Just as Nick and Banner were about to reach a consensus, a shout from an intelligence officer made the smile on Nick's face freeze.
