A Scientific Urban Detective

#26 - The Hunt Begins

A nondescript white-collar worker walked towards them, talking on the phone, looking like an ordinary passerby.

The man's expression was normal. As he approached, he glanced at Lin Wuming and the thug, an odd pair, then quickly looked away, focusing on his loud phone conversation.

He even slightly moved aside, as if not wanting to get involved in trouble. A perfectly normal reaction for an ordinary person.

But to Lin Wuming, who was already tense, the moment this person appeared, he was marked as an "enemy."

Out of caution, Lin Wuming refrained from attacking, slowly moving his wheelchair closer to the man, then passing him by…

Suddenly, the thug in front yelped, and a stream of blood spurted from his neck. Only then did he belatedly raise his hand to cover the wound and fall forward.

Lin Wuming's attention was diverted by the scene before him. At that moment, the suit-clad man, who had just passed him, darted forward and shot a spike from his sleeve, aiming straight at Lin Wuming.

"Hunters" were all experienced in hunting. They already knew that Lin Wuming was a Level 3 "Psychic" and suspected he had some combat experience, making him a relatively fierce prey.

Therefore, they couldn't simply start a straightforward capture operation.

——Against a beast, you must first injure or even seriously wound it before capturing it.

Hunter "Three" was doing just that.

Experienced as he was, he knew how conspicuous his sudden appearance in this empty area would be, and that Lin Wuming must already be wary of him.

So, he had to find a way to divert his attention and then seize the opportunity to defeat him in one move!

The specific method was to first kill the lackey leading the way—since he had already betrayed the organization, eliminating him was justifiable—this act of attacking "one's own comrade" would inevitably cause confusion for the target.

——If the target was even more kind-hearted, he might even try to help the lackey, making his next action even easier.

Even if the target didn't care about the lackey's life or death, a moment's distraction was enough for Hunter Three to complete the attack.

The spike in Three's sleeve was propelled by high-pressure gas, and its penetrating power at close range even surpassed bullets.

This was a popular special equipment among the dark side organizations of Academy City, specifically designed to deal with Psychics.

Psychic abilities possessed excellent defensive capabilities, but as a versatile superpower, its strength was insufficient compared to other superpowers specializing in defense.

Unless it was a Level 4 Psychic, the psychic barrier was only a relatively tough layer of defense. As long as the attack power was sufficient, this defense could be broken.

A spike with concentrated destructive power was the best armor-piercing weapon, which a Level 3 Psychic ability couldn't stop.

And as long as he could successfully wound the target, the physical pain would disrupt his mental strength, hindering him from continuing to use his superpower.

Being able to endure severe pain and maintain a stable output of superpowers required a strong will and long-term professional training; unless they were members of the dark side, only a few espers possessed such qualities.

According to the information provided by the client, the target had only recently awakened his superpower, so he couldn't possibly belong to this category.

Therefore, as long as he hit the target, the mission could be declared complete!

Hunter Three's attack was fierce and experienced, and the timing was perfect. The feigned attack plan to divert the target's attention had achieved the desired effect.

However, his attack ultimately failed.

Because Lin Wuming was not an ordinary Level 3 Psychic.

In addition to his psychic ability, he also had a passive ability called "Bullet Time."

As the enemy's spike ejected from his sleeve and approached his body, Lin Wuming once again felt the flow of time around him slow down.

Having experienced this special state for the third time, Lin Wuming was somewhat accustomed to it. He knew that this must be an attack that could pose a substantial threat to him, even a fatal one.

And with the golden combination of psychic ability and "Bullet Time," he would surely save his life and even counterattack!

Under "Bullet Time," Lin Wuming clearly felt the entire process of his psychic barrier being penetrated by the spike.

For a moment, Lin Wuming even thought he was facing the Honey Ant's rapier again!

Fortunately, with the previous experience, Lin Wuming no longer panicked but calmly took countermeasures.

Since the psychic barrier couldn't stop the enemy's attack, he would use the simplest and most direct method—stacking armor to deal with it.

If one layer wasn't enough, then two layers; if two layers weren't enough, then three, four, five, six layers...

The kinetic energy carried by the spike was ultimately limited—as long as he could block it before it hit him, that would be enough.

The benefit of "Bullet Time" was that it gave Lin Wuming ample reaction time, allowing him to calmly manipulate his psychic ability to form new barriers to resist the attack.

The speed of a superpower completely depended on the esper's own reaction speed. Therefore, as long as Lin Wuming's mind was fast enough, he could stack enough layers of defensive barriers!

Moreover, Lin Wuming wasn't simply confronting the spike head-on. While blocking the attack, he was also using his psychic ability to deflect the spike's trajectory and launch a counterattack against the enemy at the same time.

The suit-clad man was hit by the psychic block and flew backward uncontrollably. His own retreat also offset some of the spike's penetration.

The final result was that Lin Wuming was safe and sound, unharmed.

In contrast, the enemy clutched his abdomen and retreated, finally falling to the ground.

But "Bullet Time" had not been deactivated, so in slow motion, Lin Wuming saw the dark muzzle of a gun appear from the enemy's other hand; at the same time, a pointed bullet shot out from the muzzle.

This attack was very sudden and well-disguised. If Lin Wuming had relied solely on luck or his own reaction to resolve the previous move, then it would have been difficult to dodge this shot.

This stab and shot were Hunter Three's signature combo, which had been effective in previous capture operations. And like the spike, the bullet he fired was also a special armor-piercing bullet designed for psychic barriers, with amazing penetration.

But unfortunately, what Lin Wuming truly relied on was not pure reaction speed, but the special ability of "Bullet Time."

In the face of the slowed-down flow of time, all things were equal. Hunter Three firing the gun, even every detail of the bullet leaving the barrel, was clearly presented in his eyes.
