A Realistic Mount & Blade Game
#9 - Visitation from the stairs
As evening approached, the setting sun cast its rays upon the city's outskirts, and a chilling draft began to creep in.
Night was falling.
Those at home began preparing fuel for their fires.
Those still outside quickened their pace, consciously hurrying back to the safety of their homes.
Especially as the sun dipped towards the horizon, almost everyone remaining in this world felt a growing anxiety.
Apartment building.
Seventh floor.
A group of Swadian militiamen, who had spent the afternoon harvesting an entire acre of wheat, were now quite content.
Inside Shen Mu's apartment, a fire pit had been lit, and the large amount of wood gathered from other rooms was now being put to good use, fueling a roaring blaze.
This was also related to preparing a fire for cooking.
Some Swadian militiamen were already hacking away at the system-awarded bread with a cleaver on a cutting board.
Each chop of the blade looked and sounded as if they were indeed chopping at a tree stump.
Shen Mu, watching from the side, twitched slightly.
But he could understand.
The bread in Calradia was similar to a coarser, harder, and denser baguette.
The dough wasn't even properly leavened before being thrown into the bakery's oven for baking.
The result was a hard, long-lasting food, perfect for extended marches or travels.
At that moment, Shen Mu even began to miss the one-handed axes wielded by the Swadian recruits.
Those axes, usually used for chopping firewood, could definitely solve the problem of these rock-hard, solid bread stumps with ease.
Besides, Shen Mu didn't really want to eat the bread.
After scavenging through all 40-plus rooms on the floor, he had managed to find a good amount of fresh vegetables, canned goods, rice, flour, and soft bread.
As for those Calradian delicacies from the Middle Ages, where the culinary standards were still relatively low...
"I really don't have the stomach for it," Shen Mu thought, feeling unable to bring himself to eat them.
The only thing that seemed acceptable was the large pot of fresh wheat porridge simmering over the fire pit.
Its rich, fresh wheat aroma was something that Shen Mu could barely tolerate.
"Two of you, come with me to patrol the corridors outside," Shen Mu said, not wanting to sit around idly any longer, deciding to take a walk.
Two Swadian militiamen immediately stood up and followed him.
He opened the apartment door.
The corridor outside was already quite dim.
But it was still barely visible.
After circling the '日'-shaped apartment structure, they found nothing unusual.
Of course, before it was completely dark, it was impossible to discover any real anomalies.
"But the Otherworld scene behind that door needs to be watched carefully."
Shen Mu frowned slightly.
Right in front of him, an ordinary-looking security door was firmly closed.
The room number on it was 7040.
And inside that room was the Otherworld scene he had discovered earlier, where time and space had been distorted!
Although, upon first entering, it had only contained a floor covered with corpses.
However.
Shen Mu, recalling his predecessor's memories of these Otherworld scenes filled with various monsters or opportunities, felt uneasy.
"If I get the chance, I need to get rid of this Otherworld scene as soon as possible," Shen Mu muttered.
After all, the entrance to this Otherworld scene was too close to his own room.
Shen Mu was silent for a moment before leading the two Swadian militiamen back.
Just as they were passing the stairwell, one of the Swadian militiamen frowned slightly.
"Hmm?" The Swadian militiaman seemed to have spotted something, pointing his spear directly at the stairwell with the fire door next to the elevator.
"Come out!" the Swadian militiaman shouted, "I saw you!"
Shen Mu followed the militiaman's gaze.
In the stairwell, a small figure seemed startled, turning into a shadow and rushing down the stairs.
It looked like a child of about ten years old.
"Hmm?" Shen Mu frowned slightly, stopping the two Swadian militiamen beside him who wanted to give chase, "No need to chase after it."
Night was about to fall.
Entering the dark stairwell, they didn't know what might happen, so it was better to be cautious.
"Lord Shen Mu, what happened?"
Seven or eight Swadian militiamen, hearing their comrade's voice, quickly came out with their weapons.
"There was a figure like a child, but very fast," the Swadian militiaman who had first noticed the situation explained simply, his face showing some frustration, "But I didn't see what it was."
"We need to arrange for sentry posts from now on," the Swadian militiamen's faces also turned grave.
"It's okay, go back," Shen Mu said calmly, signaling everyone to return.
Especially as he watched the setting sun sink lower outside the window.
As the sky grew darker.
Shen Mu glanced at the fire door at the stairwell, a thoughtful look on his face, "That shadow just now seemed to be..."
Just now, he had seen a glimpse of the shadow's appearance.
Covered in fur, wearing an ancient-style cloth robe, with typical Otherworld attire.
"Halfling?!" Shen Mu muttered to himself.
The memories left behind by his predecessor also reminded him that his predecessor had seen halflings before.
The clothing and height were indeed similar.
Combined with what that guy named Geng Jun had said, that on the fifth floor of this apartment building, there was a strange person, and the halfling kind followed.
Perhaps it was that guy's halfling, coming up to scout the situation.
"Let's go back, it's nothing big," Shen Mu said, feeling slightly relieved.
The halfling Otherworld race was known for being friendly.
At least, in the three years since the Otherworld crystal wall system had shattered and collided with Blue Star, everyone had learned enough about common Otherworld information and the intelligence of related races.
That was why Shen Mu was relatively relieved.
At least, compared to the halflings, the jackalwere under Geng Jun's command were more alarming to Shen Mu.
Jackalwere were standard lawful evil.
Returning to the room.
The Swadian militiamen, who had originally been relatively relaxed, had already spontaneously begun arranging sentry posts.
Two Swadian militiamen were stationed at the apartment's security door.
Responsible for observing the situation outside the door.
And the burning situation of the candles in the toilet.
Then, on the left side of the room, which had been connected to the next apartment, but only had an entrance the size of a security door, which was now blocked by various wood and debris, there were also two Swadian militiamen stationed there.
Because outside the entrance that had been opened on the left wall was actually Shen Mu's acre of wheat field that had already been harvested.
Much of the harvested wheat was still piled in the field, waiting for the next threshing.
After all, the wheat field was formed by connecting 20 apartment rooms, and the space was very large, and it might be eroded by darkness after dark.
At that time, if undead monsters appeared, the militiamen stationed there could discover and warn in advance.
Shen Mu expressed his satisfaction with the spontaneous distribution of these Swadian militiamen.
This also showed the professionalism of these militiamen.
However, just as Shen Mu sat down and was drinking the thick wheat porridge, a dialog box suddenly appeared in front of him.
[Ding! A temporary mission has detected an event occurring!]
[Mission Released: Defend Against Invasion.]
[Mission Briefing: Darkness is about to descend, and the undead monsters hidden within are already restless. Please protect your wheat field, it is your asset.]
[Mission Conditions: Defend against the undead monsters' attack and ensure survival until daylight.]
[Mission Rewards: Denars × 500; Immigrants (Small Scale) × 1 wave; Random Draw Scroll (Low-Tier Troops) × 1; Swadian Light Infantry Template (Protagonist) × 1.]
"Mission?" Shen Mu was slightly stunned.
Then, outside the window, the setting sun, which had been struggling not to fall behind the mountain, had completely set.
'Buzz!' Instantly, the sky, which had still been slightly dim, was shrouded in a deep darkness.
A chill from the soul spread.
This made Shen Mu raise his head to look out of the dark, invisible window, his face grave.
Now came the most dangerous night.
