As early as 1985, Canadian experimental physicist Simpson used the method of measuring and analyzing the beta energy spectrum of tritium nuclei to look for heavy neutrinos.

Through this experiment, Simpson announced that in the beta decay of tritium, heavy neutrinos with a mass of 17.1 keV/c were found, and their mixing intensity was 3%.

Simpson then gave a lecture on the experiment at Harvard University.
